A months-long sexual assault investigation has led to the arrest of a Toccoa man after authorities say forensic testing played a pivotal role in the case.
On Tuesday, March 3, the Toccoa Police Department announced the arrest of 58-year-old Stephen Pittman following what officials described as an extensive and detailed inquiry into a reported rape. Investigators spent several months gathering physical evidence, according to authorities, and conducted interviews and pursued forensic analysis before the arrest.
According to police, DNA evidence submitted for laboratory testing allegedly linked Pittman to the alleged assault, leading to charges of rape, two counts of sexual battery and two counts of exploitation of a disabled person.
Police say the investigation required careful coordination and a thorough review of all available evidence. Because of the sensitive circumstances and to protect the privacy of the victim, authorities declined to release additional details about the case.
Toccoa Police Chief Bruce Carlisle said sexual assault investigations are among the most serious cases his department handles.
“This case reflects the dedication and persistence of our investigators,” Carlisle said. “We are committed to standing with victims and using every tool available to hold offenders accountable.”
