A press release issued by Ashlyn Brady, Habersham County Public Information Officer, confirmed that one person was hurt Friday afternoon in a single-vehicle wreck at Mile Marker 14 on Ga. 197 North near Batesville.
Units from Habersham County Emergency Services and the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched at 3:57 p.m. Friday, with the callers who were passing by and noticed the vehicle down the embankment reporting smoke and possible flames.
Arriving deputies arrived to find an SUV about 75 feet down an embankment against a tree and facing the Soque River.
“Upon arrival of our crews, we secured the vehicle and with the assistance of Station 16, Station 13, and Station 17, we extricated the victim out,” said Battalion Chief Michael Alexander of Habersham County Emergency Services.
After about an hour, crews who freed the driver — working together with sheriff’s deputies, towing operators, and a bystander — were able to get the driver up the steep embankment and into a waiting ambulance.
Alexander said the driver suffered minor to moderate injuries and was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center Gainesville.
The Georgia State Patrol is investigating and details of the wreck and those involved should be obtained from that agency.
The road reopened after about two hours.
