A fast-approaching deadline could mean the difference between a lower property tax bill and paying more.
County officials urged homeowners to submit homestead exemption applications by Wednesday, April 1, for the tax break to apply to their 2026 bill. Though the county accepts applications year-round, applying after the deadline delays the tax break until the following year.
The exemption is available to residents who both own and live in their home as of January 1, according to county officials. In households with multiple owners, only one person needs to file.
What homeowners need to know
First-time applicants must appear in person at the Habersham County Tax Assessors Office, located at 130 Jacobs Wy in Clarkesville, to complete the required paperwork.
Officials say applicants should bring a valid driver’s license and a certificate of occupancy for newly built homes. Once approved, the exemption renews by default each year as long as the home remains the primary residence.
Habersham County also offers additional tax relief for certain individuals including seniors, low-income residents, disabled veterans and surviving spouses of service members or first responders.
Homeowners who live within city limits also could qualify for separate municipal exemptions.
