Habersham County officials have announced several updates to the proposed Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) and are encouraging residents to review the document and provide feedback before it is considered for adoption.
County leaders say the UDO is intended to be a living document that will continue to evolve as community input is received and discussions move forward ahead of a final vote by the Habersham County Board of Commissioners.
Officials have already addressed several concerns raised by residents and are continuing to evaluate additional feedback. One notable change includes the removal of the derelict vehicle ordinance from the current proposed UDO following public comment.
Another issue that has generated significant discussion is the inclusion of data centers in the ordinance. While the county cannot legally prohibit data centers outright, the proposed UDO includes provisions intended to place restrictions on such developments.
As currently written, any proposed data center would require a Special Use Permit, meaning each project would need approval from both the Planning Commission and the Board of Commissioners before moving forward.
County officials say they are also reviewing additional requirements, including minimum standards and other potential safeguards related to data center development.
Habersham County leaders emphasize that public input remains an important part of the process and encourage citizens to review the proposed ordinance, ask questions, and share feedback to help ensure the final document reflects the needs and priorities of the community.
To provide another opportunity for public engagement, Habersham County will host a town hall meeting to discuss the ordinance and recent updates.
