Demorest City Council Supports FLOST Proposal, Approves New Mobile App for Residents

The Demorest City Council took action on several initiatives aimed at improving city services and planning for the future during a special called joint work session and regular meeting held Thursday, July 9.

The meeting, which was moved from its traditional Tuesday schedule to accommodate scheduling conflicts, included action on a proposed countywide property tax relief measure, a new mobile engagement platform for residents, and discussions on several infrastructure projects.

Council Supports Countywide FLOST Initiative

One of the evening's most significant actions was the unanimous approval of an intergovernmental agreement supporting Habersham County's proposed Floating Homestead Local Option Sales Tax (FLOST).

If approved by county voters, the one-cent sales tax would be used to help offset local property taxes by providing participating governments with an additional revenue source. The agreement allows the City of Demorest to participate in the countywide initiative, which is expected to appear before voters in November.

New GoGov App Coming to Demorest

Commissioners also unanimously approved a contract with GoGov, a civic engagement platform designed to improve communication between the city and its residents.

Once implemented, the mobile app will allow citizens to access city information, receive notifications, report concerns, and connect with municipal services from their smartphones or other mobile devices. City leaders said the platform is intended to make local government more accessible while improving communication with the public.

Infrastructure Projects Continue to Move Forward

During the work session, council members also reviewed several projects and proposals that remain under consideration.

Among the topics discussed were potential improvements to the City Hall parking lot, proposed updates to the city's cemetery regulations, and progress on several water system projects aimed at strengthening Demorest's infrastructure.

While no final action was taken on those items, city officials indicated they remain priorities as planning continues.

The July 9 meeting reflected the council's continued focus on balancing long-term planning with day-to-day improvements that affect residents throughout the city.

From supporting a potential property tax relief initiative to investing in new technology and reviewing infrastructure needs, council members addressed a variety of issues intended to enhance city services and prepare Demorest for future growth.
