After several years of inactivity, the Atlanta Dragway in Commerce is set to roar back to life this fall. The historic racing venue is scheduled to officially reopen in October 2026, highlighted by the IHRA Outlaw Nitro Series World Finals taking place October 22–24, 2026.
The Atlanta Dragway originally opened in 1976, built on land intended for an airport. It came to represent the heart of American motorsports. In 2021, it closed, taking with it many memories from fans.
The reopening follows approval by the Banks County Board of Commissioners in February 2026, clearing the way for the facility to resume operations under specific conditions after its closure in 2021.
The property has been acquired by the International Hot Rod Association (IHRA), which plans to restore the track and reestablish it as a premier destination for drag racing in the Southeast. The event will restore a place for families to gather, racers to build careers, and a hub for competition and dreams.
Conditions for Reopening
As part of the county’s approval, several operational guidelines have been put in place. Racing activities will primarily take place on weekends, with a key restriction prohibiting racing before noon on Sundays. The measure was implemented to accommodate a nearby church and balance community interests with the return of the track.
Preparing for the Return
Since closing in 2021, the Atlanta Dragway has remained largely inactive and will require significant preparation ahead of its reopening. IHRA officials are expected to undertake improvements and updates to ensure the facility is ready to host the high-profile World Finals event.
A Boost for the Local Economy
The return of racing is expected to bring renewed economic activity to the Commerce and Banks County area, drawing racing fans, teams, and visitors from across the region. Local businesses, including restaurants, hotels, and retail establishments, could see increased traffic during major events.
The October World Finals will mark not only the return of competitive racing to the facility but also a new chapter for a track that has long been a staple in Northeast Georgia motorsports.
