Mac Koon Named Habersham County Public Works Director

Habersham County has named Mac Koon as its new Public Works Director, promoting him to the position after he most recently served as interim director.
Koon joined Habersham County in December 2024 as Assistant Public Works Director. He brings more than 18 years of public service experience to the position, including military service and work with the U.S. Department of Defense.
As Public Works Director, Koon will oversee a department responsible for maintaining more than 500 miles of county roads, along with a fleet of nearly 500 vehicles and pieces of equipment. He will also oversee operations at Habersham County Airport.
“Mac has demonstrated strong leadership, dedication, and a commitment to serving Habersham County since joining our team,” County Manager Tim Sims said.
Sims said Koon’s military and Department of Defense experience, along with his work in the county’s Public Works Department, has given him an understanding of operations, resource management and providing dependable services to residents.
Koon began his military career in 2008 and continues to serve in the U.S. Air Force Reserve as a Senior Master Sergeant and Vehicle Management Superintendent.
He also spent several years working with the Department of Defense as a Contracting Officer’s Representative and Transportation Specialist. His work included contract management, transportation operations, government procurement and management of programs and resources.
Since joining Habersham County, Koon has been involved in road and fleet operations, employee training and safety, fleet planning, purchasing, grant research and emergency response.
“I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue serving Habersham County in this role,” Koon said. “I truly enjoy working with our employees and serving the citizens of this county. I strive to approach my work according to Colossians 3:23—to work wholeheartedly and give my best in everything I do.”
Koon said his priorities as director include improving operational efficiency, building on work already underway within the department and making responsible use of county resources.
“My goal is to build on the work we’ve already started, improve the way we operate, and make sure we’re providing the best service we can with the resources we have,” Koon said. “I’m proud to be part of Habersham County, and I’m excited about what we can accomplish together.”
Koon holds a bachelor’s degree in Government Contracting and Acquisition from American Military University.
“I look forward to continuing to work alongside County leadership and the Public Works team to improve infrastructure, strengthen operations, and prepare the department for the future,” Koon said.
