As winter weather moves into our area, preparation is the key to staying safe and warm. Ice storms can create dangerous driving conditions, power outages, and extremely cold temperatures. Use this checklist to make sure your household—and your neighbors—are ready.
At Home
✅ Charge all phones, tablets, and battery packs
✅ Prepare flashlights and extra batteries (avoid candles if possible)
✅ Set thermostats consistently and avoid turning heat off completely
✅ Let faucets drip and open cabinet doors to prevent frozen pipes
✅ Stock easy-to-prepare food and bottled water
✅ Locate blankets, coats, gloves, and hats in case of power loss
Vehicles & Travel
✅ Avoid travel if at all possible once temperatures drop
✅ Remember: bridges and overpasses freeze first
✅ Keep an emergency kit in your car (blanket, water, flashlight, snacks)
✅ Fill your gas tank before the storm arrives
✅ Keep windshield fluid topped off
Pets & Livestock
✅ Bring pets indoors—no matter how thick their fur is
✅ Use straw (not hay) for outdoor animal bedding
✅ Provide wind barriers and dry shelter
✅ Check water sources often to prevent freezing
✅ Increase food intake slightly for outdoor animals to maintain body heat
Family & Neighbors
✅ Check on elderly neighbors, those living alone, or anyone without heat
✅ Make sure children understand safety rules and stay indoors
✅ Keep emergency numbers written down in case phones lose power
✅ Have a plan if power is lost for an extended period
During the Storm
✅ Stay off the roads unless necessary
✅ Listen for updates from local officials and trusted news sources
✅ Report downed power lines and do not approach them
✅ Dress in layers to stay warm indoors
