The Habersham County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved approximately $50.2 million in bonds to move construction of the county's new jail forward during Monday night's meeting, while commissioners also denied a proposed go-kart track following opposition from area residents.

The $50.2 million bond resolution was one of the most significant items considered during the August 17 meeting. The financing will allow Habersham County to begin construction of the new jail before all of the designated SPLOST revenue has been collected.

Approximately 40% of the bond will be covered through the new SPLOST. By obtaining the financing now, the county can move forward with construction rather than waiting for those tax revenues to accumulate, a move intended to help avoid potentially higher construction costs associated with delaying the project.

Commissioners approved the bond resolution unanimously.

Go-Kart Portion of Racing Track Proposal Denied

Another issue drawing considerable public interest Monday night involved a conditional-use request for property on Ponderosa Road.

The original request sought permission to operate a go-kart and remote-control car racing track on approximately 5.58 acres of property located in a Low Intensity District.

Several people attended the public hearing to voice opposition to the proposal. The property owner and a representative spoke in favor.

Following the public hearing and discussion, commissioners denied the go-kart portion of the proposal, limiting the conditional use to an RC-only track.

The decision means remote-control car racing may move forward under the approved use, but go-kart racing will not be permitted as part of the project.

Veterans Honor Guard Recognized

The evening also included a moment of recognition for those who have dedicated themselves to honoring local veterans.

Members of the Grant-Reeves Veterans Honor Guard were recognized by the Board of Commissioners for their service.

The Honor Guard has played an important role in the community by helping ensure veterans receive the recognition and respect they deserve.

Baldwin Annexation Does Not Move Forward

Commissioners also discussed Cook Construction and Real Estate's application involving the proposed annexation of approximately 45 acres into the City of Baldwin.

The annexation proposal was not approved by the Board of Commissioners Monday night.

The matter had been included on the agenda for discussion as commissioners considered the potential annexation of several parcels into the city.

Monday night's meeting brought decisions on issues ranging from future county infrastructure to land use, while also providing an opportunity to recognize members of the community who continue to serve Habersham County's veterans.
