Young football players in Habersham County will have a unique opportunity later this month as former NFL and University of Georgia wide receiver Tavarres King returns home to host a free youth football camp at Raider Stadium.
The camp will take place Saturday, May 30, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. and is open to Habersham County boys ages 10 and under. Participants will receive instruction from King along with several former Habersham Central Raider standouts, including Sen. Bo Hatchett, Wesley Hulsey, Dewan Barron, and other former Raider football players.
Organizers say the camp is designed to teach the fundamentals of football while encouraging teamwork, discipline, sportsmanship, and confidence in young athletes. This is a no tackle - no pads event.
Lunch will be provided at no cost to all participants thanks to sponsorship from Sen. Bo Hatchett.
"I believe in the value of youth sports. Anything that I can do to give children the experiences and skills to play sports, I want to support it," Senator Hatchett explained.
In addition to the camp, organizers are announcing a new scholarship fund that will help cover all or part of Habersham Recreation Department football registration fees for families needing financial assistance.
The scholarship fund, sponsored by Sen. Bo Hatchett, aims to ensure that every child who wants to play football has the opportunity to participate, regardless of financial circumstances. Families interested in learning more about the program are encouraged to visit the registration table during camp check-in or pick-up.
"This camp is about more than football," Ashley Hatchett said. "This is about an investment in our community's children. We want to help them build confidence, learn valuable life skills, but more importantly, we want to make sure every child has the chance to play."
I really believe in the value of youth sports and involving children
