Cornelia Leaders Set to Take Up Taxes, Zoning and City Property Tuesday

Cornelia city leaders will meet Tuesday with decisions involving property taxes, land-use regulations and city property on the table.

The Cornelia City Commission’s September 1 meeting will include a public hearing giving residents an opportunity to comment on the city’s proposed millage rate before commissioners take further action.

The meeting agenda does not list the proposed rate, leaving details about what Cornelia property owners could see in the coming year to be presented during the meeting.

Another issue returning to commissioners involves the rules governing how property can be used and developed within the city.

Commissioners will continue consideration of Ordinance No. 06-26-01, a proposed amendment to Cornelia’s zoning ordinance. The matter is listed as unfinished business from a previous meeting, although the agenda does not spell out the changes contained in the amendment.

A separate decision could result in a new gate being installed at city property on Moss Street. Commissioners are expected to consider the proposal Tuesday, but information about the project’s cost and the reason for installing the gate was not included with the agenda.

Residents who want to speak directly to commissioners will also have an opportunity during the meeting.

The city’s public forum allows individuals up to three minutes to address the commission. The forum is intended for comments on regular city business, while issues with formally scheduled public hearings are addressed during their respective hearings.

City Manager Dee Anderson will also update commissioners on city operations during August, and the commission will consider minutes from its August 4 meeting.
