Road Department Prepared for Winter Storm Fern

Public Safety prioritized and Patience Urged

The National Weather Service is forecasting a significant winter storm starting to impact the area on Saturday January 24 continuing through the weekend into Monday, with ice accumulation expected and Snow on top of that to make conditions especially hazardous. Ice-covered roadways, trees, and power lines will greatly increase the difficulty of response operations and elevate safety risks for both the public and emergency crews.

In preparation, the Road Department is fully mobilized and ready to respond to storm-related debris, downed trees, and roadway obstructions. Crews will treat roadways with salt and other materials as weather and temperatures allow in an effort to reduce hazardous conditions.

Due to the expected ice accumulation, response times may be impacted, and residents are strongly urged to remain at home and avoid all non-emergency travel. Fortunately, much of this storm is expected to occur over the weekend, reducing the need for travel.

If a fallen tree is blocking a roadway, residents should call 911 immediately, especially if power lines are involved. Do not touch or attempt to move debris that may contain power lines, as these situations are extremely dangerous. Our crews will assess the scene, coordinate with the appropriate utility companies, and begin clearing operations once conditions are safe.

Debris Removal Process

  • The first priority is reopening roadways for emergency vehicles and essential public access.

  • Debris will initially be pushed to the right-of-way to restore traffic flow as quickly as possible.

  • Crews will return in the weeks following the storm to complete full right-of-way cleanup. Due to the anticipated volume of debris, this process may take additional time.

A Community Effort

We thank Habersham County citizens for their cooperation and patience during this storm. Please remember

  • Call 911 to report blocked roads or downed trees.

  • Never approach or handle debris involving power lines.

  • Stay indoors and off the roads whenever possible during icy conditions.

Your safety is our highest priority. We thank our dedicated Road Department staff for their tireless efforts and continued service to the community.
