There were no injuries to civilians or emergency personnel that have been reported, but the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Thursday, January 8, 2026, at 3:58 a.m. on Harris Street in Mt. Airy, the Habersham County Emergency Services responded to a residential structure fire.

Multiple units were dispatched to the scene and upon arrival encountered a 1,000-square-foot, single-story residence with an estimated 80 to 90 percent fire involvement. Due to heavy fire conditions and a roof collapse believed to have occurred prior to the arrival of emergency personnel, firefighters initially deployed attack lines and conducted defensive operations from the exterior.

Once conditions improved and the scene was deemed safe, crews transitioned to interior firefighting operations. A thorough search of the residence was completed, and no victims were found. All occupants were accounted for.

The Georgia State Fire Marshal's Office responded to the scene and has assumed responsibility for the fire investigation.

WCHM will keep you updated as information is made available from The Georgia State Fire Marshal's Office.
