Clarkesville will soon welcome the sights and sounds of spring as the 64th Annual Mountain Laurel Festival returns in May 2026, bringing with it a weekend filled with community traditions, artisan vendors, live entertainment, and family-friendly fun.
Among the most anticipated events each year is the 15th Annual Rubber Duck Race, hosted by Volunteers for Literacy of Habersham County. The event has become a favorite festival tradition, combining laughter and friendly competition with a meaningful mission—supporting literacy programs throughout the community.
On Saturday, May 16, hundreds of bright yellow rubber ducks will take to the waters of the Soque River after being dropped from Sutton Bridge at Pitts Park at 2:00 p.m. The ducks will race downstream toward the finish line, where lucky adopters will have the chance to win cash prizes of $1,000, $500, and $250.
For just $5, supporters can adopt a duck and help fund literacy efforts that impact lives across Habersham County.
The excitement begins even before the race itself. Local businesses once again will participate in the popular Deck-a-Duck contest, decorating oversized ducks in creative and imaginative ways for festivalgoers to admire and vote on throughout the day.
Families will also find plenty to enjoy during the Family Fun Fest from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at Pitts Park. The free event will feature bouncy houses, games, activities, and entertainment designed especially for children and families.
Volunteers for Literacy of Habersham County continues to play an important role in the Mountain Laurel Festival while supporting adult literacy and educational programs throughout the region. Organizers say events like the Duck Race help raise awareness and funding for programs that provide tutoring, educational resources, and opportunities for individuals working to improve reading and language skills.
Festival organizers encourage residents and visitors alike to come out, enjoy the festivities, and take part in one of Clarkesville’s most cherished spring traditions.
Duck Race tickets may be purchased at the event or online through Volunteers for Literacy.
