Nature lovers and curious hikers will have the opportunity to discover the edible plants growing in the wild during a special guided walk at Smithgall Woods State Park on Saturday, March 14, 2026.
The program, scheduled from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., will be led by Dr. Hennigan, an avid forager and herbalist with decades of experience studying wild foods and natural plants.
Participants will learn how to identify some of the edible plants that grow naturally in the area and gain insight into the long tradition of foraging.
The guided hike will cover less than two miles and is considered moderate in difficulty, making it accessible for most participants who enjoy walking on woodland trails.
Organizers say the program offers a unique opportunity to explore the natural beauty of Smithgall Woods while learning practical knowledge about the plants that surround us every day.
The event is reservation only, and space may be limited. Those interested in attending are encouraged to call the park’s visitor center at 706-878-3087 to reserve a spot.
A $5 parking pass is required for vehicles entering the park.
Smithgall Woods State Park, located near Helen, is known for its scenic trails, rich wildlife habitat, and educational programs that connect visitors with North Georgia’s natural environment.
