Habersham County paramedics will soon have new technology available when responding to heart attacks and other critical medical emergencies after the county received a $500,000 federal grant to purchase 10 new cardiac monitors.

Habersham County Emergency Services was awarded the funding through FEMA's Assistance to Firefighters Grant program. The money will be used to purchase 10 LIFEPAK 35 cardiac monitors to replace aging equipment currently used by local emergency medical personnel.

The project is receiving additional support from Georgia Power, which is contributing $100,000 to cover the required local grant match as well as grant-writing expenses. According to the county, that contribution means local taxpayer dollars will not be needed to meet the grant's matching requirement.

The new monitors will give paramedics updated equipment for evaluating and treating patients experiencing cardiac emergencies and other serious medical conditions.

The technology also allows patient information to be transmitted directly to hospital emergency departments while EMS crews are transporting a patient. That can give hospital medical teams additional time to prepare for the patient's arrival and treatment.

“Receiving this grant, along with the support from Georgia Power, is a tremendous benefit to our department and the community we serve,” Habersham County Fire Chief and EMS Director Jeffrey Adams said. “These new monitors will give our EMS personnel updated technology to better care for patients during medical emergencies while helping us make the most of available funding.”

FEMA's Assistance to Firefighters Grant program provides funding to fire departments and emergency medical service organizations for equipment, protective gear, training and other resources.

The Habersham County project was awarded under FEMA award number EMW-2025-FG-01115.
