Cornelia Commission Approves $1.65 Million Reservoir Improvement Project

A major infrastructure investment topped the agenda Tuesday night as the Cornelia City Commission approved moving forward with a multi-million-dollar improvement project for the city's reservoir.

Acting on the recommendation of the project's engineer, commissioners unanimously approved a contract totaling approximately $1.656 million for the Reservoir Improvement Project during the commission's Tuesday, Aug. 4 meeting. The project represents one of the city's significant infrastructure investments aimed at maintaining and improving its water system.

Residents also had an opportunity to address commissioners during a public hearing concerning traffic safety on Williams Street. Citizens expressed concerns about vehicle speeds in the neighborhood and requested the installation of a speed bump to help slow traffic. Commissioners also discussed the possibility of installing a speed-feedback sign, which displays a driver's speed as vehicles pass by in an effort to encourage safer driving habits.

The commission also issued a proclamation recognizing Recovery Month, joining communities across the nation in raising awareness about recovery from substance use and mental health challenges while honoring individuals, families, and organizations that support the recovery process.

Additional business included approval of an amendment to the city's zoning ordinance as well as revisions to Cornelia's animal control agreement with Habersham County.

The meeting began with an invocation and the Pledge of Allegiance. Commissioners also approved the meeting agenda and the minutes from the July 7 regular meeting before moving into the evening's business agenda.
