Banks County Sheriff's Office Warns Residents About Growing Check Fraud Threat

The Banks County Sheriff's Office is urging residents to take extra precautions when mailing checks as criminals continue to target mailboxes and postal deliveries in an effort to commit financial fraud.

According to a recent advisory issued by the sheriff's office, thieves are increasingly stealing checks from the mail and altering them for their own use. In some cases, criminals are able to "wash" checks by removing the original information and replacing it with new names and amounts. Other stolen checks may be used to gain access to victims' bank accounts.

Law enforcement officials say a few simple steps can significantly reduce the risk of becoming a victim.

One of the most important recommendations is to avoid leaving outgoing mail in unsecured mailboxes for extended periods of time. Instead, residents are encouraged to place mail directly inside a post office or official postal collection box whenever possible.

Authorities also advise against leaving checks in residential mailboxes overnight, when they may be more vulnerable to theft.

Another tip offered by the sheriff's office involves the type of pen used when writing checks. Officials recommend using a black gel pen, noting that the ink is more difficult for criminals to remove or alter.

Residents are also encouraged to make checks payable to a specific individual or business rather than leaving blank spaces that could be manipulated.

In addition to protecting mailed checks, the sheriff's office recommends regularly reviewing bank account activity for unfamiliar transactions or suspicious withdrawals.

Officials say early detection can help prevent larger financial losses and make it easier for banks and law enforcement to investigate fraudulent activity.

"If you notice missing checks, unauthorized withdrawals, or suspicious activity on your account, contact your financial institution immediately and report it to law enforcement," the sheriff's office stated.

As financial scams continue to evolve, authorities say awareness remains one of the best defenses. By taking a few extra precautions before mailing checks and routinely monitoring account activity, residents can better protect themselves from becoming victims of check fraud.
