Wild Wednesday for Habersham Emergency Services

Habersham first responders were kept busy Wednesday evening with two 9-1-1 calls, one for a two-car accident and the other reporting a fire.

The first call about the traffic accident came in at 6:35 p.m., followed by multiple others reporting a multiple-vehicle accident on Highway 441 at Hollywood Hills Rd.

“Units arrived to find two vehicles, one van and one truck, with major damage to the van,” Habersham Emergency Services Director Chad Black said. “The occupant in the van had to be extricated and a total of four patients were transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center,” he added.

Two of the injured were taken to the trauma center with serious injuries while the other two were reported as being in stable condition. Another refused transport at the scene.

While units were still on the first scene, another call was received by Habersham 9-1-1 at 7:37 p.m. reporting a structure fire in Demorest.

Crews responded to the residence at 142 Savannah Ridge Trail and quickly determined it was a single room fire confined to the kitchen area.

“Crews were able to make to quickly make an interior fire attack and extinguish the fire,” Black said.

The occupant of the house received burns to the hands and face, according to Black, after she attempted to put out the fire. She was transported to the burn unit at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta.

The fire was determined to have started by the food the woman was cooking on the stove. No other injuries were reported and crews were back in service from at around 9 p.m.
