Veteran broadcaster, community volunteer Bobbie Foster passes away

By Rob Moore

Bobbie Carpenter Foster of Cornelia, a woman whose name was synonymous with broadcasting and community service in Habersham County and beyond, passed away Monday morning.

Foster was a 2015 inductee into the Georgia Association of Broadcasting Hall of Fame, with her husband John, as owners of WCON FM/AM.

The couple purchased WCON Radio in Cornelia in 1962 when it was only a 250-watt AM station, and through the years increased power to 50,000 watts and most recently 100,000 watts.

While it is difficult to think of Bobbie Foster without involving the radio station, she was a pioneer for women in business in Habersham, being one of the first women selected to membership in the Cornelia Kiwanis Club, was an organizer of Habersham Business and Professional Women, and was an integral part of the Chattahoochee Mountain Fair Committee for four decades.

For more than 50 years, Foster rarely missed a Sunday as organist for First Baptist Church of Cornelia.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, April 7, at Level Grove Baptist Church. A private burial will be held.

The body will lie in state at the church from 2-3 p.m. prior to the service, and the family will receive friends at the church immediately following the service.

The family requests that memorials be made to the Level Grove Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 416, Cornelia, GA 30531.
