UPDATE: Demorest Fire Called In By Arrested Man Charged With Arson

UPDATE: Demorest - On Jan. 22, Investigators with the Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner’s Office arrested Logan Michael, 22, of Demorest, for one count of Arson in the First Degree.

The charge stems from his involvement in setting fire to an apartment in which he lived located off of Double Bridge Road in Demorest. He is currently in the Habersham County Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing.

The fire was called in around 11:30 p.m. on Jan. 21 by Michael himself.

Before it was extinguished, the fire caused moderate damage to the interior of his apartment that sits above a garage. During an interview with Michael, he admitted to setting the fire and was consequently arrested for First Degree Arson.

“It is always nice to have a suspect in custody virtually the same night after a fire is ruled arson,” said Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner John F. King. “Of course, this would not have been possible without multiple agencies coming together for one common goal: finding the arsonist. On behalf of the agency, I would like to say thank you to the local law enforcement professionals that assisted with this case.”

Investigators with the Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner’s Office assisted the Habersham County Fire Department, the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office, the City of Demorest Fire Department, and the City of Demorest Police Department with this investigation. First Degree Arson is a felony punishable by a fine of no more than $50,000 or by a prison term between one and twenty years, or both.

Michael is the ninth individual to be arrested with the assistance of the State’s Fire Investigations Unit in 2020.
