Dawson Co., - A mother was shot and killed in front of her two children in a parking lot of a Dawson County fire station Monday night.
According to media outlets, the incident happened “just after 7:30 p.m. outside the station at 170 Dawson Forest Road in an unincorporated part of the county.”
It’s reported that two vehicles pulled into the parking lot, one driven by the deceased victim and the other by a man who fired several shots at the woman which resulted in killing her. The man then surrendered to law enforcement.
Neither child, ages 5 and 8, was injured during the shooting. They are now in the custody of Georgia Division of Family and Children Services.
The shooter was identified to be 44-year-old Jeremy Wade Gibson, the victim was identified as Amy Gibson.
Dawson County Sheriff Jeff Johnson told media outlets “The fire station should be a safe haven, and obviously that’s what we believe that this lady was looking for.”
Dawson County Fire and Emergency Services sent out their thoughts and prayers over Facebook and stating that “As first responders, we're trained to react to some of the worst scenarios you can think of. However, rarely do we actually witness these scenarios play out in front of us as our firefighters and their families did last night.” The post continues by stating that “We would ask that you continue to show your support for these employees and our great community. Even though inexplicably terrible things sometimes happen, we believe Dawson County is still a great place to live.”
The GBI was called to the scene to process evidence.
