Missing Women on Chattahoochee Found Safe

Two women who went missing on the Chattahoochee River overnight Wednesday were found safe early this morning.

Officials say the two women were found shortly after 7 a.m. at a store in White County.

"Initial reports are they may have become lost and slept in a field overnight but both appear to be ok," said Habersham County Emergency Services Director Chad Black.

First responders with Habersham Emergency Services arrived on scene along with White County Fire after receiving the call around 2:45 a.m.. They were then told two females had likely been rafting on the Chattahoochee earlier but they had not returned to their vehicle. Keys to the vehicle and cell phones were found inside.

Lee Arrendale Fire and the Georgia State Patrol Aviation Unit assisted in the near 5-hour search. As daylight approached, crews requested the assistance of other Swift Water Teams to assist in entering the water to do a more thorough search by boat and along the shoreline.

But that wasn't needed as the two women were found shortly after daybreak. Habersham Assistant Fire Chief Jason Davy noticed the pair walking out of the woods near a Dollar General store in White County.

"They apparently got lost last night and had been sleeping in a field all night," Black added.
