Habersham Co. - Habersham County students are having to rely on local churches for lunches during the two-week school closures.
“Unfortunately, the Habersham County School System will not be able to provide meals during our two-week school closure,” says Director of Elementary Schools, Rhonda Andrews. “While schools are closed, it is not good practice for our nutrition employees to handle food. Our school system nutrition department will be donating all perishable produce and milk currently in inventory to the Northeast Georgia Food Bank, which is able to provide food to the public.”
Andrews went on to tell WCHM that the school system website will also include a link to foodfinder.us, a website and app which gives the locations for free food assistance for families in need.
Connextion Church in Cornelia is just one of the local churches dedicating their time to personally pack and deliver lunches to Habersham students.
Mickey Carroll with Connextion Church said in an online video that volunteers were able to make around 3,000 bag lunches from the donated food.
It was reported that the Habersham County school officials were going to meet today regarding their current lack of lunch distributing policy.
