Habersham Co. - In a Facebook post, Habersham County Sheriff, Joey Terrell, stated the following: "The Habersham County Sheriff’s office along with the GBI is currently conducting a death investigation on Hwy 105 just north of Old Athens Hwy."
Terrell continued the post, stating that "Skeletal remains were located at a makeshift campsite. It appears that there are no immediate signs of foul play although the investigation is still ongoing. More details will be released at a later time."
(UPDATE) Authorities are still waiting on lab results to identify the remains found Thursday night at a makeshift campsite. The remains have been sent to the state crime lab in Decatur. Habersham County Sheriff Joey Terrell states that it "could be several months" before the remains are identified.
According to Deputy Coroner, Kenneth Franklin who received a call from the GBI Division of Forensic Science in Decatur approximately around 6 pm, the remains are still unidentified until further "DNA and anthropology testing" is conducted.
The GBI assisted the Sheriff's Office with the investigation and processing the scene.
