Cornelia mother arrested for murder of infant

CORNELIA - The mother of a three year old infant that passed away on April 8, 2019 is currently in jail on the charges of Murder, Cruelty to Children 1st Degree and two counts of Aggravated Battery.  Elba Maureen Santiago was charged after the trauma that the three month old infant had endured was consistent with child abuse.

On April 2, 2019, Cornelia Police Officers, Fire Department, and the Habersham County EMS responded to AppleTree Inn in reference to an unresponsive infant.  Once on scene, the Habersham EMS transported the female infant to the Northeast Georgia Medical Center. There the decision was made that she was to be Life-Flighted to the Scottish Rite-Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, where she would eventually pass just a few days later.

Cornelia police chief Chad Smith said in a press release that, "This is an active investigation and further details and injuries will not be released. This case has shocked the conscience of everyone involved, so please keep the family and all public safety personnel involved in your prayers."

As of press time, no bond had been set for Santiago.
